SS-31 is also known as elamipretide.
It is a mitochondria-targeted peptide studied for its interaction with cardiolipin, an important lipid in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Because that membrane is central to mitochondrial energy production, researchers have investigated elamipretide across a range of mitochondrial and cellular-stress models.
There is also an important regulatory distinction: an FDA-approved elamipretide medicine, Forzinity, received accelerated approval in 2025 for a specific indication in Barth syndrome patients meeting the labeled criteria.
That approval is specific to the regulated medicine and indication and does not establish that unapproved research products are equivalent.
