MOTS-c is usually discussed in the context of mitochondria and metabolism, but a 2026 study explored something very different.
Researchers described MOTS-c as a mitochondrial-encoded host defense peptide and studied antibacterial and immunomodulatory activity. The work included E. coli, MRSA, human monocytes/macrophages, and a mouse model of acute infection.
That’s a pretty interesting reminder that mitochondrial biology reaches well beyond energy production.
The important context: much of this evidence came from cell and animal experiments. It does not establish MOTS-c as a treatment for infections in people.
