What Is a Peptide?

🧬 WHAT IS A PEPTIDE?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins.

One easy way to picture it:

Amino acids are letters. Peptides are short words. Proteins are much longer sentences.

Many naturally occurring peptides act as signaling molecules. They can help cells communicate and participate in processes involving hormones, metabolism, growth, immune signaling, and tissue biology.

That is why peptide research covers so many different areas. Different peptides interact with different receptors and pathways, so two compounds that are both called “peptides” can have very different biological effects.

The big takeaway: “Peptide” describes a type of molecule, not one single function.

Stay curious, research friends. 🧬
