PT-141 — also known as bremelanotide — has been studied specifically for sexual desire and sexual dysfunction.
Rather than working primarily through the same vascular pathway associated with drugs such as sildenafil, bremelanotide acts through melanocortin signaling in the central nervous system.
The research eventually led to an FDA-approved prescription form of bremelanotide for certain premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
Important distinction: that approval applies to the regulated prescription drug and its specific indication. It doesn’t establish that research products are approved medicines or that the drug is indicated simply to enhance sexual performance.
