🧬 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INITIAL WEIGHT LOSS?
SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN studied adults with obesity after an initial period on tirzepatide. Participants were then assigned to continue their maximum tolerated dose, reduce to 5 mg, or switch to placebo.
After another year, the reported proportions of previously achieved weight reduction maintained were 96.5%, 67.9%, and 42.8%, respectively.
The interesting question here isn’t “which dose should someone take?” This wasn’t a personalized dosing experiment.
It’s what maintenance research can teach us about what happens after substantial initial weight reduction.
Human research gets more useful when we look beyond the headline number. 🧬
